How to Troubleshoot a Modbus Register That Returns the Wrong Value
Published September 26, 2026
A step-by-step approach to register type, address, byte order, word order and data interpretation problems.
A Modbus device can communicate correctly while still returning a value that looks wrong. This is often a data interpretation problem rather than a transport failure.
1. Confirm the register type
Check whether the point is a coil, discrete input, input register or holding register. Function code selection follows that data model.
2. Confirm the address convention
Documentation may show human-friendly addresses while the actual protocol request uses an offset. Compare the device manual with the address entered in the client.
3. Check quantity and width
A 32-bit value usually occupies two 16-bit registers. Reading only one register can produce an incomplete value.
4. Check byte and word ordering
If the raw response looks plausible but the converted number is not, test the available byte and word ordering options.
5. Inspect the raw frame
HEX diagnostics help separate communication problems from interpretation problems. First establish that the expected bytes are arriving; then work upward into data conversion.
