Modbus Polling Intervals: How to Choose a Practical Scan Rate
Published September 23, 2026
A practical way to think about Modbus polling intervals without overloading a device or network.
Polling too slowly can make a process appear unresponsive, while polling too aggressively can increase communication traffic and device workload. The right interval depends on the process and the device.
Start with the process requirement
A temperature trend usually does not need the same update rate as a fast machine state. Define how quickly the value actually needs to change before selecting an interval.
Consider the transport
Serial RTU has different timing characteristics from Ethernet-based TCP. Request size, baud rate, number of devices and response time all affect the practical cycle.
Watch the device
If a device becomes slow or drops requests after increasing the polling rate, step back and test with a slower interval. A stable, repeatable scan is more useful than a nominally fast scan that creates intermittent failures.
